Meet Andrew

Andrew Macpherson is a renowned British photographer whose work spans the worlds of fashion, music, and film. Known for his innovative and visually striking style, Macpherson has captured some of the most iconic images of celebrities, actors, and musicians over the past few decades. His portfolio includes work with high-profile clients and publications like Vogue, Vanity Fair, and Rolling Stone, and he has photographed major figures such as Pink, Dustin Hoffman, and U2. MacPherson is recognised for his ability to blend artistic creativity with technical precision, making him one of the most respected photographers in the industry.

Inscribing on the Mother-Chain

"I have long been fascinated by the concept of money as the lifeblood of civilization and the idea that currency should flow like a river, nourishing and flourishing all," Macpherson reflects. He expresses discontent with current financial systems, citing concerns about central banking cartels and their drive for totalitarian control. In contrast, Bitcoin represents a beacon of freedom and decentralization for him. "It was only in the last few months that I was introduced to the concept of inscribing my images into Bitcoin by my friend @publius.btc."

Macpherson has a personal connection to the permanence Bitcoin offers, having lost the first 10 years of his work in a devastating fire. The possibility of securing his art on the blockchain resonates deeply. "The idea that my images could be a part of this revolutionary new currency really appealed to me." He believes that tokenization and shared ownership of art could revolutionize the relationship between artists and collectors by bypassing traditional gatekeepers like galleries and publishing houses, which have dominated the photography art world for years.

Influence of Iconography and Working with Celebrities

Macpherson’s extensive experience photographing celebrities has significantly shaped his approach, particularly in the digital age. Iconography has long been a focus of his work, and photographing performers in Hollywood solidified his reputation as an “iconographer.” He explains, "The smaller screen and instant impact an image has to make has pushed me to be even more graphic and dramatic, because in the digital domain things really have to stand out to catch your attention."

A defining moment in his artistic journey came during his time working with the legendary band U2. "They split everything equally between the five of them, and the harmony of that core relationship infected every part of their crew," he recalls. This experience taught him the importance of harmony and collaboration, principles he continues to carry with him in his work.

The Transition to Digital Photography

As a photographer who has witnessed the shift from physical to digital formats, Macpherson understands the unique challenges and opportunities this transition presents. He compares the evolution of photography to the transition in music, where cover art has shrunk from 12-inch album covers to postage-stamp-sized icons for streaming platforms. The digital age has transformed the trickle of images in magazines into a torrent of constant content, making it more difficult to capture and hold attention.

Despite these challenges, Macpherson is finding new ways to engage viewers. His current focus is on creating larger bodies of work that tell a story across multiple formats while remaining impactful as individual images. His latest series with Gamma is a prime example of this, as it combines graphic black-and-white photography with a critique of societal norms surrounding female sensuality. These pieces also fit within the constraints required for inscription on the Bitcoin blockchain, marrying his traditional photography with cutting-edge technology.

The Role of Storytelling in Macpherson’s Work

Storytelling has always been central to Macpherson’s photography, and it’s especially important when working with well-known individuals. "The greatest story I’ve been able to tell in my career is P!nk’s," he says, recalling his ongoing collaboration with the artist that began over 20 years ago. Witnessing her evolution from a scrappy punk to a global superstar has been a highlight of his career.

When asked about advice for photographers interested in the digital art space, Macpherson emphasizes the importance of community. "Movements and communities are key, we are all stronger together, so find your tribe and grow together." Though he’s just beginning to explore the digital realm, he sees great potential in its ability to connect and empower artists and collectors alike.
