Augie, a Jack Russell Terrier, took my life by storm the day he arrived from Virginia at 10 weeks of age. He was a tiny but mighty puppy who learned to leverage his cuteness to get whatever he wanted.
I have a chronic illness that has caused a disability, and Augie is my assistance dog. I give him much of the credit for the quality of life I enjoy because of his constant and crazily positive presence. He is a goofball who loves to destroy squeaky toys and play tug-of-war…sometimes at 5:00 am. He eats anything, accompanies me to all kinds of destinations, and he’s become a spoiled little visitor at many of the art studios around mine. His little furry face has so many expressions- most of them hilarious- that tell me exactly what’s on Augie’s mind. He is now 18 lbs. of pure attitude and struts and swaggers like he’s a giant. Having him at my art studio means I laugh a lot and I want my work to inspire that kind of joy in others.
As an artist, I have often found great solace in color, creating eye-popping combinations in my works. This collection of 88 pieces pays homage to the sweet little beastie who infuses so much bright color into my world. Augie gives me a reason to get out of bed and boldly create every day, to work through my illness with laughter and exercise, to choose happiness as a vehicle to better living.
